There are 24,000 places to eat and drink in NYC, says NYC Hospitality Alliance executive director Andrew Rigie, one of our moderators. The regulatory and permitting climate is tough, he says, and a lot of power resides with community boards, which have a say in liquor license approvals. You’ll have a better shot if you work with brokers who know the neighborhoods and experts who know permitting. One spot that seems welcoming, he says, considering the number of residential units coming online, is Downtown Brooklyn.
