Traditional industrial uses, artists, and new digital companies all are growing in LIC, and they all like the same kind of building—the old brick durable enough for industrial and cool enough for creative office, says Liz (snapped with Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen and Modern Spaces’ Eric Benaim, who's also speaking at our event). The good news is that developers are sprucing up the biggest of those buildings, finally providing options for midsize creative commercial tenants: Atlas Capital’s 1M SF Factory Building, Jamestown’s 600k SF Factory Building, Madison Marquette’s 445k SF Center Building, and RXR’s 330k SF Standard Motors Building.

LIC is bigger than anyone realizes, says Liz. Estimated conservatively, it would stretch from Manhattan's 34th to 86th streets and First to Tenth avenues. The community could survive and thrive as a city on its own, with loads of culture, a giant rooftop farm (the Brooklyn Grange on the roof of the Standard Motors Building, above), parks, transit, a thriving industrial sector, and Fortune 500 companies.
