Michaels Development and LINC Housing broke ground for the Red Star Apartments, a $23M mixed-use TOD in West Oakland. (It gets its name from the Red Star yeast factory that once stood there, but we still played a quick game of Find the Russian Spy.) The project consists of 119 units, retail space, a computer center, and a rec center. Because of its yeasty history, it required extensive remediation. Residents, however, won’t need to pay too much bread (it's an affordable seniors community). Designed by KTGY Group in Oakland, Red Star will incorporate numerous green building practices and technologies and is located next to a BART station.
