NAIOP GOES TO WASHINGTON

NAIOP NYC recently traveled to DC for its annual chapter leadership and legislative retreat, joining counterparts from the US, Canada, and Mexico to hash over business legislative environments affecting the industry with our politicians. The government officials were very interested and receptive to the industry’s concerns, says Monday Properties COO and NAIOP NYC prez Brian Robin—and knew what NAIOP was talking about and wanted to stay engaged, he tells us. Among the topics raised: carried interest treatment of the real estate sector; depreciation treatment of brownfield and leasehold improvement investments; and transportation and infrastructure investment opportunities. Congress members they talked to included Carolyn McCarthy, Carolyn Maloney, Jerry Nadler, Adolphus Towns, and Rob Turner. (They also met with reps for senators Schumer and Gillibrand and other Congress members.)
This is not American Bandstand, it's better. Big kudos to the chapter for winning two accolades at the retreat: 2011 Chapter of the Year Award and 2011 Chapter Merit Award for its developing leaders program. Above: Brian accepts the awards with Monday Properties’Aaron Twersky, NAIOP NYC’s Elysha Chang, JLL’s Paul Formichelli, Cooley’s Alan Cohen, NAIOP prez Tom Bisacquino, and Ackman-Ziff’s Rick Lechtman. He tells us it’s going to be an exciting year for the chapter, particularly for education, advocacy, and events. The next event (March 30) will feature architectural gurus from preservation experts Beyer Blinder Belle and adaptive-reuse masters Kohn Pedersen Fox. That’ll be followed by an event on sustainability in April, focusing on its impact on investment, tenants, and community.
