| April showers bring May flowers—and with them, the real estate industry to help beautify its surrounding communities. The Alliance for Downtown New York kicked off the green thumb movement earlier this month with an annual Community Planting Day, where more than 100 Lower Manhattan residents helped spruce up Wall Street Park, including Downtown Hospital's Cora Fung and NYC Council Member Margaret Chin. Participants cleaned, raised, and improved the existing soil in planting areas, and planted annuals throughout the park. The event is part of the Downtown Alliance's Going Green Downtown initiative, which is dedicated to advancing Lower Manhattan as a new sustainable CBD. |
| In nearby Stamford, Conn., Malkin Properties planted flowers at the Lathon Wider Community Center as part of a program called Keep Stamford Beautiful, a non-profit that aims to preserve and enhance the appearance of the city. Volunteers from the firm—with their family and friends—planted flowering annuals in barrel planters and in entrance gardens along Henry Street and Woodland Avenue. Malkin also hired landscaping company Eastern Land Management to arrange the cleanup of the property, prepare the planting beds, and provide the plants. The firm's Stamford portfolio includes the 285k SF Metro Center and the three-building, 810k SF First Stamford Place. |
| The developers of Embelesar118, the co-op development at 152 E. 118th St., have also committed to rebuilding the adjacent 5.1k SF community garden at Lexington Avenue and 118th Street as the 58-unit building nears completion. Plans are to renovate the garden with an architectural wrought-iron fence, new sidewalk, and curbs. |
