In the wake of last week’s fatal crane collapse that rocked the city, Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced new safety measures for the construction industry.
As part of the new measures, crawler cranes are required to cease operations and secure equipment when winds are forecast to hit 20 mph. Failure to safeguard equipment will result in a $10k fine, Real Estate Weekly reports.
After the collapse, de Blasio ordered all 376 crawler cranes in the city be inspected before being put back into service. The incident is still under investigation by the Department of Buildings to determine what went wrong.
Last Friday’s accident occurred when construction workers at 60 Hudson St were attempting to secure a crawler crane during windy and snowy conditions. The crane buckled during the crew’s attempt, resulting in the crane crashing down onto Worth Street, killing one and injuring several others. [REW]
