| Suburbia is not sustainable, a group of top engineers and architects recently said at the Center for Architecture as they discussed communities in the age of global warming. Speakers included WSP Flack + Kurtz’s Dan Nall, FXFOWLE’s Mark Strauss, SOM’s Earl Jackson, WSP Energy and Environment’s Peter Sharratt, and Hutton Associates’ Ernest Hutton. In addition to looking at case studies of NYC, Philly, Copenhagen, and Hyderabad, India, the speakers talked about integrated energy systems for communities, the importance of public transportation, solid waste treatment, and the role of policymakers in sustainability initiatives. Other tidbits: Speakers urged people to use sources besides drinking water for actions like flushing toilets and irrigating land. They also noted that Google Maps can help determine opportunities for creating green roofs. Though we suspect this might've just been a retroactive excuse for playing with Google Earth all day. |
