Does cutting-edge office space necessarily have a sustainable component? Yes, but cutting edge and sustainability mean different things to different people and organizations, DPR Construction project executive Chris Gorthy tells us. Cutting-edge space goes beyond current industry-recognized sustainability certification systems and jurisdictional requirements, Chris says.

Chris offers some examples of cutting-edge office design and sustainability practices from DPR's new office project, currently under construction outside Washington, DC:
Rooftop solar that will produce as much energy as needed on a yearly basis. One of the first of its kind for a leased office environment.
A collaborative team to analyze and select a mechanical system that was scored based on cost, acoustics, comfort and energy demand.
Use of natural daylighting and plug load management systems to dramatically reduce the largest potential energy user.
Ensuring that data will be widely available and public, so that efforts will continue beyond LEED or Net Zero Energy certification.
