The average American will spend $83 on Halloween this year, up from $74 per person last year. Total spending for America's spookiest holiday will reach $8.4B, an all-time high for the National Retail Federation's annual data.

All those superhero capes and princess dresses (the top two costumes for kids) add up to $3.1B in costume spending in 2016. Two-thirds of those who celebrate Halloween will buy costumes. About two-thirds of Halloween dollars will be spent on costumes and candy.

Discount stores account for the largest portion of that spending with specialty stores, grocery stores, department stores and online stores trailing behind.

This 12% year-over-year growth makes holiday shopping for 2016 and Halloween spending for 2017 look more like a treat than a trick.
