With some remote workers now two and a half years into the work-from-home era, one professional sports team decided to take them out to the ballgame.
The Seattle Mariners hosted the first “Work from the Ballpark” game Wednesday at T-Mobile Park, when the team played the White Sox in a midday game, according to Bloomberg. The promotion sold 150 tickets.
“More people are still working from home. ... We have an opportunity here at the ballpark, midweek day game, a great space in the Hit It Here Cafe to give fans a chance to get out of the home office and get a different experience,” said Gregg Greene, Mariners senior vice president of marketing, to MLB.com.
The promotion is limited to fans who purchased a $50 ticket to sit at the Hit It Here Cafe. The tickets included a catered meal, a seat, WiFi access and a special entry from the right-field gate. The cafe was chosen because it provided a quieter environment for workers, according to the MLB.
No other MLB ballpark has hosted a remote work-oriented promotion like this, according to Greene. He said his team came up with the idea during the All-Star break.
For now, Wednesday's event will be the only one of its kind this year, but given its success there will likely be more during midweek games in 2023, MLB.com reported.
“We received overwhelming positive fan feedback and we are exploring ways to build upon this concept in the future,” a Mariners spokesperson told Bloomberg.
