The LA City Council’s entertainment and facilities committee just approved a master plan for the Civic Center in DTLA, a move that would guarantee the demolition of the Parker Center. The city council will continue to discuss whether to approve the plan Friday.
The LA City Council voted last month not to give landmark status to the building, which served as the headquarters for the LAPD for nearly 55 years, Curbed Los Angeles reports.
As part of the master plan, the building would be torn down but some of its art, including a sculpture by Bernard J. Rosenthal, would be preserved. City Councilman Jose Huizar, who represents DTLA, first proposed the idea.
The plan would include at least 1.2M SF of new office space, and the Parker Center would be replaced with a 27-story building with about 713K SF of office space and 37K SF of retail on the street level.
