Saunders Construction CEO Steven Saunders (here with wife Valerie) tells us that the general contracting firm performed its first seismic retrofit in 1984, which was also the very first of this procedure done in LA (at 6th and Coronado, in case it ever becomes a Jeopardy answer). That simple seismic upgrade for a red brick building was earth-shattering for Steven, who saw the niche early on and made it his major business to this day. Currently, the retrofits are much larger, with concrete buildings and more complicated, vulnerable structures being strengthened by Saunders all along the West Coast.
