Cobb Fendley was the big winner at this year’s Canstruction competition at CityCentre. Here’s the team (led by Ashlee Hiser) with its “Olaf of Food Keeps Hunger Subdued” sculpture, which was named jurors’ favorite, people’s choice and best use of labels. The firm’s Ronn Carabajal was also recognized with the Benjamin Franklin Award, which is given to a Canstruction team member or mentor who best exemplifies the Ben Franklin quote, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.” Every November, Canstruction pits AEC firms against each other to build the best display out of canned food, and raises donations for the Houston Food Bank.

Here’s the Kirksey/Turner Construction team, led by Kirksey’s Michael La Nasa, with its Despicable Peas entry. The team donated 3,000 cans of tuna, 1,000 cans of peas, 500 cans of tropical mixed fruit and 300 cans of ranch style beans to the Houston Food Bank. Kirksey and Turner earned an honorable mention. Other awards—Ziegler Cooper’s AmeriCAN Feast won for structural ingenuity, Perkins + Will’s CANzilla vs Hunger used the most needed items, and Intecsea also received an honorable mention.
