Major Houston Expansion Planned for UT System

The University of Texas System has announced a comprehensive strategic plan that will include a major expansion in Houston. Step one: acquiring 300 acres here.

Chancellor William McRaven outlined the plans in remarks to the board of regents on Thursday, the Houston Business Journal reports. UT System plans an "intellectual hub" in Houston that will help all of the campuses within the system leverage key sectors in business, energy and health. Earlier this week, the board of regents authorized the acquisition of more than 300 acres off Buffalo Point. Plans for the land haven't been decided, but McRaven plans to convene a task force early next year to begin the planning process.

In addition to the big plans in Houston, McRaney outlined several other “quantum leaps” the system has planned. Among the highlights, UT System plans to implement the American Leadership Program, which will be available to all UT students as part of the core curriculum. The proposed expansion and renewed efforts into training our future leaders are just one more sign that the future looks bright for Houston. [HBJ]
