The former Savoy Hotel, a Downtown eyesore for decades, has been resurrected as a Holiday Inn flagship.
The Holiday Inn Houston – Downtown at 1616 Main St has 212 rooms and a beer-centric bar concept called Burger Theory, according to the Houston Chronicle. The new hotel also has a fitness center, a 1,200 SF meeting and event space, and a 1,500 SF outdoor terrace overlooking the north side of Downtown.
The original Savoy was built next door to the current hotel in 1906. It was Houston’s first high-rise apartment building and also has the notoriety of being where Lee Harvey Oswald stayed for a few days in September 1963 when he was applying for a job at Conoco. That building was torn down in 2009.
The now-Holiday Inn was bought by a group of investors in 2013 after being abandoned in 1988. [Chron]
