The massive societal shutdown caused by COVID-19 prompted Uber Technologies to temporarily stall construction activity on the company's Tower I inside The Epic mixed-use development in Deep Ellum this week.

"As a consequence of the current COVID-19 crisis, we are going to temporarily pause some construction in Dallas until 2021," a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.
"In the long-term, we don’t anticipate any changes to our strategy or expectations regarding growth in the state."
The ride-sharing giant, which chose Dallas' Deep Ellum as its next regional home base, plans to continue construction on Uber's Tower II location inside The Epic. The Epic II broke ground in November.
Uber announced plans in August to bring 3,000 jobs into Deep Ellum, occupying spaces inside Epic I and II. Westdale Real Estate Investment and Management announced that its planned 23-story, second office tower at The Epic would serve as Uber's 450K SF home base, with move-in expected in Q4 2022. While construction proceeded on Epic II, Uber intended to move 700 employees into 168K SF in Epic I.
Though work has stopped on its space in Epic I through at least the end of this year, Uber said its long-term strategy of moving thousands of employees into Epic II and delivery of that property is still expected to occur sometime in 2022.
