Six Corners Redevelopment Receives Aldermanic Support

An empty Bank of America in the center of Portage Park's Six Corners shopping district would serve as the foundation for a massive retail redevelopment under a plan unveiled by Clark Street Real Estate.

Six Corners at one point was the city's largest retail hub outside of downtown but fell upon hard times in recent years, before slowly rebounding. Under Clark Street's proposal, the shopping center would be anchored by an Aldi supermarket and a Ross Dress for Less, according to DNAInfo.

The plan has the backing of Ald. John Arena (45th), but some residents who lived through the area's downturn are frustrated that upscale retailers like Trader Joe's (which is owned by the same German conglomerate that operates Aldi) wouldn't commit to the neighborhood. Arena said Clark Street reached out to Trader Joe's but the company wouldn't commit because it had no plans to build new stores in Chicago for the next three years. [DNA]
