A 48K SF Grocery Store Is Coming To Woodlawn

Woodlawn, which has already seen $400M in private investment and infrastructure improvements as the result of a $30.5M HUD choice neighborhood grant, will soon be home to a 48K SF Jewel-Osco grocery store.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel made the announcement late yesterday. The store will include a drive-thru pharmacy and is expected to bring 200 permanent jobs to the neighborhood.

The Preservation of Affordable Housing is selling the last remaining parcel in that development at 61st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue to a JV of Terraco Real Estate Development & Management and DL3, which will build the supermarket. The nonprofit has been redeveloping the former Groce Parc Plaza public housing site into modern, affordable housing in Woodlawn.

POAH vice president Bill Eager told Bisnow last month that POAH was in talks with grocers to locate to Woodlawn, which was designated as a food desert in a landmark study by researcher Mari Gallagher. The site of the future grocery store is two blocks from the Cottage Grove Green Line station, making it ideally suited for customers who lack cars.
