The Jewellery Quarter's Biggest Sparkle So Far

A £125M development of the 4-acre AE Harris site will take Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter to the next level. And for once actual jewellers will benefit.

Galliard Homes and Apsley House Capital plan 100K SF of commercial floorspace and 320 apartments on the site bounded by Newhall, Graham, Brook, James and Northwood streets.

Two Grade II listed buildings at the site — 109 Northwood St., the former Harper’s Hill Works, and a neo-Georgian factory on the corner of Newhall and James streets — will be preserved, as will 123 Northwood St., which extends to Regent Place, and 128 Northwood St.

There will be a new street along what is currently the private road serving the AE Harris factory.

Galliard and Apsley say their aim is to create space for jewellery workers, an ambition not every Jewellery Quarter scheme shares.

“As well as new homes, the scheme’s ground floor commercial space will provide opportunities for up-and-coming independent bars and restaurants, whether that’s local heroes or brands new to the city," Galliard Chairman Stephen Conway said. "We are also keen to support jewellers and artists by providing affordable retail and business space. Community leaders have also told us of the need for event space in the Jewellery Quarter. This is something we will look to incorporate."
