Earlier this month a proposed plan to drastically change the historic Alamo was unveiled to the public. The plan, the result of work by 113 people representing 25 different firms under the direction of a six-member master plan management committee, includes closure of portions of Alamo and West Crockett streets to traffic; converting three buildings on the west side of Alamo Plaza to a modern, four-story museum with a rooftop garden and restaurant; dismantling, repairing and relocating of the 1930s Alamo Cenotaph and adding glass walls to show the Alamo's original walls.

The total cost of the plan is expected to be $450M. San Antonio has committed $17M, and offered another $21M for pedestrian and aesthetic upgrades as a bond issue this May. After an initial $25M for the plan, the Texas General Land Office has requested $75M from the state legislature this year for the Alamo. Gene Powell, a board member of the endowment and chairman of the plan’s management committee, said the endowment expects to privately raise another $225M.
