Could Atlanta Motor Speedway Take The SunTrust Park Route?

Could the owners of Atlanta Motor Speedway be looking to redevelop the property around the McDonough racetrack, à la the Atlanta Braves' SunTrust Park?

There was certainly a strong hint of that this week when Speedway Motorsports CEO Marcus Smith talked about the possibility at a number of the firm's racetracks during a call with stock analysts.

“Certainly our markets...Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Sonoma, in all our properties you got some great locations,” Marcus said. "And large areas of land contiguous acreage, that has a lot of value. I do think that there is a tremendous amount of opportunity.

"I think all of those big development ideas take some time to be able to put together all of the details that go along with it," he continued. "But...I do think there is an opportunity to unlock some value there. And we've been looking at it.”
