Education-Tech Firm 2U To Take 80k SF At Dumbo Heights

The education-tech company 2U Inc. is in the late stages of a deal for almost 80k SF at 55 Prospect St., part of the Dumbo Heights complex owned jointly by Kushner Cos, LIVWRK and RFR.

The deal, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, would entail the firm leaving its 20k SF space at Chelsea Piers on the far West Side of Manhattan.

“We started looking in Manhattan first, and we realized it is too crowded,” 2U chief technology officer James Kenigsberg told the Journal. “We wanted a little bit of a micro-neighborhood, more like a community than a bunch of businesses located near each other.”

More than 7M SF of new office space is set to open in Brooklyn within the next two years, and that doesn’t count projects that are further down the road to opening their doors, like Thor Equities' 623k SF office project on the Red Hook waterfront.
