As grocery stores struggle to stay relevant in the age of Amazon, many are finding new homes as anchors of residential developments.

These destination grocery stores are more than your typical place to buy milk and bread — a luxury residential mixed-use project being built by Atlanta developer Balfour Beatty will be anchored by a 72k SF Whole Foods complete with a 5k SF pub and a 4k SF cooking school, ConstructionDive reports. Executives said moving closer to customers while redefining grocery stores as destinations is part of the shift to deliver things people need in addition to other upscale amenities.

And it is not just happening in Atlanta. Whole Foods is also anchoring two developments in Los Angeles and San Diego, and both locations are designed as places where people will want to hang out rather than just buy groceries.
