It’s Official—Trump Taps Former GOP Presidential Candidate Ben Carson For Head Of HUD

After much speculation, President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate former GOP presidential rival Ben Carson as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development today.

If appointed, Carson would be the first African-American to be selected for Trump’s administration, the Wall Street Journal reports. Though he still needs Senate approval before the job is officially his, if selected Carson would be responsible for overseeing federal public housing programs, and creating policy to address homelessness and housing discrimination—all of which is work the former neurosurgeon has no prior experience in.

In a statement released by Trump’s transition team this morning, the president-elect spoke to Carson’s passion toward strengthening the nation’s communities and families. “We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities,” Trump said.
