Denver beat out Seattle as the second headquarters of Naked Wines, a subscription wine service that plans to hire 251 people in downtown Denver.

The move makes it the latest company to expand from California to Denver.

Naked Wines was founded in the UK but has its U.S. headquarters in Napa, California, according to the Denver Business Journal, and chose Denver over Seattle for its new office because of the area’s talent pool. A company announcement says that most of its U.S. workers will eventually be in Denver.

The service works by charging a monthly fee to subscribers, which it then pays to independent winemakers, and sends wines directly to its customers.

Naked Wines received $4.3M in job-growth incentive tax credits from the Colorado Economic Development Commission. To receive the credits, the company must create 251 jobs with an average salary of $121K. The company’s first hires are expected to be in software engineering, project management and marketing.

As a beverage company that relies on technology, Naked Wines represents a blending of two of Colorado’s fastest-growing industries. The state is bursting with craft breweries and is home to several distilleries and wineries, as well as a rapidly growing tech scene.

The decision makes Naked Wines the latest California company to expand its operations to Denver, following companies like Palantir and Snowflake, which opened Denver offices in recent years in search of fresh talent.

“Our location in Denver will allow us to connect directly with a vibrant talent pool and give us the access to the skills we need to share our better way to wine with drinkers across the country,” said Naked Wines CEO Nick Devlin in a statement announcing the move.

Although Colorado’s growing population has drawn many new companies to the metro Denver area in recent years, data shows that fewer people are moving to the Front Range than in previous years.

Naked Wines will open its office in a tower at 19th and Lawrence streets and begin hiring immediately.
