This Tech May Become A Student Housing Staple

College students (and their parents) can breathe easier; more campuses are implementing wearable tech to keep students safe. Campus Evolution CEO Andrew Stark tells us the off-campus student housing provider is helping residents stay secure via a free subscription to Wearsafe technology.

Campus Evolution has provided approximately 2,000 of its residents (it's got 10,000 beds across the country) with Wearsafe tech, a product that Andrew calls “ingenious.” 200 college campuses are also using the tech; Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, provided one to every incoming freshman this fall.

Wearsafe users carry a small, portable device. One click alerts trusted friends and loved ones of their location via a smartphone app. Users' GPS coordinates are only tracked when the tag is pressed and they remain confidential.

When contacts are notified that a user is in danger, they receive on-scene audio in real time. Contacts can hear exactly what’s happening, which will help them decide which specific actions need to be taken.

Those alerted can also access Wearsafe Rewind, which plays an audio recording of the 60-second window before the tag was pressed.

Contacts can then confer in the app’s group chat, a virtual situation room that allows friends and family to coordinate their plan.

Should they choose to contact the authorities, they can call 911 via the app with the push of a button.

Wearsafe lets the user know that help is coming by vibrating each time someone receives an alert.

“The core of our business is providing a safe and secure environment that is an extension of college life,” Andrew says. "Wearsafe helps us achieve that."
