SEGEL'S FETE
Combined Jewish Philanthropies honored real estate investor, professor, and public policy guru Arthur Segel for his "exceptional leadership" in the industry and Jewish community. The ceremony was at the Four Seasons nearly two weeks ago, but a nasty cold that swept through Bisnow?s vitrual office delayed this report.

CJP President Barry Shrage gives the award to Arthur, right, at a dinner for people in real estate, construction, and design. In addition to being a prof at Harvard Business School, Arthur co -founded TA Associates Realty and left there in ?01 after 20 years, with 75M SF of property that it owned or had developed in 25 US markets; he's been listed by Private Equity Real Estate Journal as one of the 30 most influential real estate players in the world.?Real estate attracts dreamers who are born optimists and little crazy,? he said. ?It's so entrepreneurial, each of us can make a difference day by day.?
William Poorvu
Arthur is actually the William Poorvu Family Professor, and whatya know, we snapped William Poorvu himself enjoying the festivities at a front table. (Our TMZ style photography will occasionally catch people unawares.) As an HBS Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship, he taught real estate courses there for 35 years, was on the faculty of Harvard?s Grad School of Design, and has authored several books. Like Arthur, Bill has long been active in the industry, as a managing partner in several firms including the Baupost Group, an investment firm where he co-chairs the Board of Advisors.
Harvard's Rick Peiser
We snapped Rick Peiser in a rare moment of respite. He's a real estate professor at Harvard?s Grad School of Design and directs the seven-year-old university wide Real Estate Academic Initiative. But for the past few months he's been jetting around the world on sabbatical doing book research. A PhD and Rhodes Scholar, even Rick seems to have his hands full at the moment. ?When you write three books at once, you feel like nothing?s getting done.? Tell us about it. (No, seriously, tell us; we can't relate.)
Goulston & Storrs' Phillip Levy, Jonathan Pearlson, and Frank Litwin
At the Goulston & Storrs table, we snapped Phillip Levy,Jonathan Pearlson, and Frank Litwin. Phil, co-chair of the firm's enormous real estate practice, has been advising clients on acquisitions and financing in this turbulent market. Jonathan focuses on environmental insurance placements, due diligence, and corporate compliance. Frank, meanwhile, negotiates leases nationwide for office and retail tenants and works with buyers and sellers on finanacing, acquisitions, and dispositions.
