Capital One plans to open the third D.C. location of its café concept in Anacostia

The Menkiti Group announced Thursday it signed Capital One Café for a 3,700 SF lease at MLK Gateway, its under-construction project at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE and Good Hope Road.

"The opportunity to have Capital One Café join us as a tenant at MLK Gateway further delivers on our mission to enhance historic Anacostia with neighborhood offerings that support community engagement and economic vitality," Menkiti Group CEO Bo Menkiti said in a release.

The move comes after Capital One in 2018 opened on two of D.C.'s busiest retail corridors: Seventh Street in Chinatown and M Street in Georgetown. The concept represents Capital One's foray into the experiential retail trend.

The Capital One Café locations feature a full-service coffee and tea bar, free WiFi, workspaces, meeting rooms, ATMs and financial professionals on hand to offer banking services to customers. The Anacostia location plans to offer free meeting space for neighborhood associations, nonprofits and students.

"Capital One Cafés are not only a place to get help with accounts or focus on financial wellness, they serve as a convening space for the local community," Capital One Senior Vice President Jennifer Windbeck said. "Our investment in the Anacostia MLK Gateway location gives us the chance to bring that experience to another important D.C. neighborhood, complementing our existing network of Cafés and Branches."

The location is expected to open next year in the first phase of the MLK Gateway project. Phase 1 features ground-floor retail beneath 20K SF of office space, leased by technology company Enlightened. Menkiti Group last month landed a D.C. agency, the Department of Housing and Community Development, to lease 55K SF in the project's second phase.

"Mayor Bowser was thrilled to work with The Menkiti Group to revitalize the MLK Gateway and to relocate Enlightened's headquarters," Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development John Falcicchio said. "The addition of Capital One as a retail tenant will provide further vibrancy and also give residents better access to a major financial institution."
