Publisher's Notebook

Like a few hundred thousand others, your publisher took a long walk Saturday to see the cherry blossoms. Actually, it looks like others opted for a faster way than walking.

Down at the WWII Memorial, we thought of Bizzy winner Chip Akridge, and all that he's done to make the Mall attractive again. We hadn't been there in a while, and were stunned at how much better it looks. Chip, thank you again, from all Washingtonians (and tourists).

We chatted up one of several WWII veterans in wheelchairs we saw enjoying the view and sunshine. This gentleman came in with some other vets from Tennessee, told us he'd gone to war in 1945 at age 18, which we think makes him 87 this year, one of the younger vets left. As we were talking, these even younger folks from Virginia walked up to shake his hand. A beautiful day and a beautiful Mall create beautiful moments

Hate to harp on the few imperfections, but in case there's someone out there who can do something about this, can't we do better at reading weather reports and anticipating there might be big crowds to see the cherry blossoms? These were hot and tired tourists seeking water and food. Many others gave up when they saw the lines.

And can't we add some trash collectors

But, yes, overall, it was glorious.
