The GSA has decided that the current Department of Labor HQ, the 1.8M SF Frances Perkins building, is outdated. Yesterday, it issued a Notice of Interest in swapping the 10-acre parcel at 200 Constitution Ave for a new HQ between 850k and 1.4M rentable SF.
The seven-story, 1.8M SF office building, steps from the Capitol, is in need of upgrades to the electrical, heating, plumbing and elevator systems. The GSA has released two issuances to explore the viability of a new HQ that would consolidate the Department’s real estate footprint and provide an alternative to costly renovations.
Since the DOL HQ is a Cabinet-level facility, it is required by law to be housed in the District. That will make the GSA's task of finding a massive office footprint especially difficult. The agency said in its press release that it wants to own the land.
