General Dynamics Selects Reston For Site Of New HQ

After reviewing hundreds of sites in the DC region and across the US, General Dynamics has selected a site in Reston for its proposed new HQ.

The defense contractor has filed papers with Fairfax County for a proposed 190k SF office building that would house 200 employees, the Washington Post reports. The site is a vacant tract of land only about a 15-minute drive from its current digs in Falls Church.

General Dynamics currently leases roughly 175k SF in an office building that is also occupied by other tenants. That lease is set to expire in March 2019, allowing for plenty of time to design a new HQ. Current plans call for a five-story building with 300 spaces of underground parking.

According to the application, the company chose the site in part “because the natural features of the site afford privacy.” Security is at a premium for the defense contractor as it often deals with classified material. The new HQ will have a security fence and a guard house near the entrance.

Fairfax County will be holding a community meeting  Jan. 20 to discuss the plan and is undoubtedly pleased that the defense contractor wants to relocate in the county. Just last month, the county kicked off plans to establish “innovation hubs” around dense, Metro-accessible areas to lure companies seeking a new home. [WaPo]
