15 Things You Need to Know This Morning

What You Didn’t Know About Randy Kenna

Title: Development and Acquisitions VP, Combined Properties.
Job: Leads a team redeveloping neighborhood shopping centers in DC metro, including three 10-acre projects planned for suburban infill. 
Years on the job: 4.
Company: 24 local neighborhood shopping centers and 20 in LA; operating portfolio is worth $1b, with another $800M in development pipeline.
Memorable project: First acquisition and development project  – Parkland Gardens Apartments (228 apartments, now Avalon North Arlington) in Arlington. A matter-of-right wood frame project in high-rise concrete market. Land acquired from two local lawyers, who became the accommodation party after home builder walked away from its deposit before the great recession. 
Current project: South Alex – 400 apartments, 41 townhomes, 45k SF of retail near Huntington Metro. Hoping to start construction in the fall.
CRE career start: After law school, worked as a real estate transactional attorney. Soon realized that disposition was more like firm’s developer clients and landed job at Archstone as a development manager. 
Grew up: Silicon Valley.
Current home: Capitol Hill.
Why DC: Came after undergrad for job sending junk mail for Capital One. 
Schools: Duke, Oxford (fellowship) and Georgetown Law.
First job: Morning paper route – 40 papers on 40 porches by 6 am.
Job in another life: ER doc – has a thing for acute stress, mental focus and meeting random people and hearing their stories.
Daily habit: Making coffee before wife wakes up. 
Guilty pleasure: Cheap sci-fi books for plane rides and beaches. Just finished “Silo Series” by Hugh Howley. Also enjoys good rum served neat. 
Bucket list: Drive from LA to Buenos Aires. 
Family: Married 12 years; two small kids; mom born in Cuba and a twin brother in California. 
Hobbies: Cooking, especially over a live fire, and even better if it’s a whole pig. 
Favorite charitable work: Food For Life – job training program that offers great food at a fair price while helping people break cycles of dependence. Also spends a lot of time helping small churches plant more small churches. 
Startling fact: Thinks Bud Light is an excellent beer.
