Holiday Retail Update
The Marketplace Fairness Act, the ICSC-backed bill that would require online retailers to collect state sales taxes, will not move forward, according to a spokesperson for Speaker John A. Boehner, reports rollcall.com.

The bill passed in the Senate last year with bipartisan support.

While the bill's death means states will not have the ability to force out-of-state websites to collect an Internet sales tax, residents of Virginia and Maryland will instead see increased gas taxes. Lawmakers in those two states tied transportation funding to the passage of the Marketplace Fairness Act or similar legislation.

ICSC reported in September that seven in ten Americans support legislation requiring sales-tax collection at the time of purchase, citing a poll of 1,016 U.S. consumers. (Read More at Bisnow.com)
