Reston Makes Headway on Park and Rec Center

The Fairfax County Park Authority has reached a commitment for a 90k SF indoor recreation facility in a 47-acre area called Town Center North, bordered by Baron Cameron Avenue, Fountain Drive, Town Center Parkway and Reston Parkway, reports Reston Now. In a complicated transaction years in the making, the park authority traded five acres across from the Fairfax County Police’s Reston District Station in exchange for 2.5 acres and the recreation center. The cost of Reston Towne Green, as it will be called, has yet to be determined but the park authority is hoping to pay with developer proffers and park bonds. The deal, which still has to pass a public hearing and a park authority board vote, may replace plans for a new Reston Community Center at Baron Cameron Park—a proposal that Reston residents opposed because of increased traffic and an unfair tax burden. A public hearing is scheduled for April 8 at the Herrity Building.
