Guess Which Date Is More Important Than April 15?

We all know the big tax deadline is approaching (rapidly). But for many DC commercial property owners, there's another deadline coming up--one that aims to make the city one of the nation's most sustainable. On Monday (April Fool's Day, no less), owners of commercial properties 100k SF and up in the District must report their energy and water usage to the city or face a fine of $100 per day. WegoWise's Craig Isakow(whom we snapped this morning at Busboys & Poets on 14th)tells us the benchmarking initiative will allow lower operating expenses, higher NOI, and even higher rents. Cities and states (21 have passed similar laws) forcing owners to take a hard look at energy usage will mean not only more efficient buildings, but less expensive bills, too.
