More Children Living in Low-Income Homes

Placeholder

About 1.7 million more children are a part of low-income working families today than during the Great Recession, says a new Annie E. Casey Foundation study. In 2013, the number was at one in four children, or 18.7 million. Nearly a third of them are in families where no parent has a full-time job. Casey Foundation CEO Patrick McCarthy says the economic recovery has left pockets of low-income, struggling communities. Jobs have been added during the recovery, but many are low wage and can’t support basic family expenses, he adds. The foundation is recommending policies that promote higher pay, paid sick leave, flexible scheduling and expanded unemployment benefits.
