The Sanctuary Condominiums, the latest church-to-condo conversion in DC, is now complete.

Located at 819 D St NE in the Stanton Park neighborhood of Capitol Hill, the building produced 30 distinctive homes carefully designed and built within the stately red brick walls of the 19th-century Gothic Revival church.

The Rubin Group’s Andrew Rubin tells us more than 75% of the units "were under contract prior to building completion, with settlements set to start in December. This pace has exceeded all sales expectations.”

He says the grandeur of the exterior is complemented by an all-new interior (below) with finishes carefully curated to evoke feelings of classic elegance.

Rich in character and sophistication, exposed brick walls and cast-iron columns, towering church windows with meticulously restored stained glass panels, and high ceilings grace each residence.

Each of the penthouses has a different layout and unique characteristics, but all include two-level living, soaring ceilings and restored stained glass windows.

The largest penthouse unit plays up extraordinary features inherent in the property. It measures roughly 2,300 SF and encompasses the church’s bell tower as well as a 15-foot-tall stained glass window and ceilings up to 24 feet.

The top of the private bell tower is more than 80 feet above the street, commanding views of the Capitol and the Supreme Court (below).

The Rubin Group also renovated two townhomes on each side of the church. The layouts were designed to have ample closet space, separate dining rooms, gracious entertaining kitchens centered on waterfall stone countertops, and large living rooms.

The restored church has attracted mass media attention. The project has been featured on NBC, Post TV, and in the Washington Post and Washingtonian Magazine. Voice of America aired a lengthy piece about the restoration of the church in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The Rubin Group led the development team with partner Regua. Bonstra Haresign Architects was the renovation’s architect, and Potomac Construction served as the general contractor. Urban Pace is selling the condos.
