Construction businesses and their employees are increasingly devoting supplies, time and talent to charities and nonprofits in their communities. April is National Rebuilding Month, a busy time for volunteers helping low-income homeowners across the United States. One organization dedicated to this cause is Rebuilding Together, a national housing organization that provides critical home repairs for low-income homeowners.

Rebuilding Together (originally known as Christmas In April) had its start in Midland, Texas, in April 1973, when neighbors banded together to rehabilitate homes around their town that were falling into disrepair. The group remained locally affiliated for 15 years, until the national arm was established in 1988. Today, the organization's local chapters (and close to 100,000 volunteers) around the country complete approximately 10,000 rebuilding and renovation projects each year.

Given the extent of the repairs required by its clients, the nonprofit is a natural fit for general contractors who are inspired to make a tangible difference in their local communities. One such establishment that has stepped up to help for over 25 years is San Francisco-based construction company Nibbi Brothers.

Nibbi's devotion to the Rebuilding Together mission starts at the top. Nibbi president Bob Nibbi and vice president and project executive Mike Nibbi both began as volunteer captains with the organization before serving on the Peninsula chapter's board of directors. Mike has stayed on the board for an additional 10 years.

“It’s often life-changing for everyone involved — clients and volunteers alike,” Mike Nibbi said.

As part of its support, Nibbi and its subcontractors donate materials, funds and construction services for one large rebuilding project in the area each year. For this year’s annual rehab project, Nibbi and Rebuilding Together are partnering to assist a homeowner in Daly City, Calif., with a number of repairs and updates. These include newly remodeled kitchen cabinets and counters, flooring, a new garage door, exterior painting and miscellaneous repairs.

Due to the project's size and scope, Nibbo Brothers' work on the house will take place over multiple weekends.

“It’s much more than just a one-day project,” Mike Nibbi said. “It is a special opportunity to help out those in need, especially given our knowledge, expertise and experience."
