Lyft is speeding up its self-driving efforts in the Bay Area. The ride-hailing company will hire hundreds of engineers in Palo Alto to develop a self-driving system, which can be later used to partner with other companies, SF Gate reports. The company does not plan to manufacture self-driving cars. The new Level 5 Engineering Division will open in August. The name stands for the designation cars receive when they can drive themselves in any circumstance.

Lyft has partnered with General Motors, Waymo, Jaguar Land Rover and self-driving startup NuTonomy in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

San Francisco is fast becoming ground zero for self-driving tech. Apple, GM, Uber and Google have been among the companies testing self-driving tech in the Bay Area.
