YouTube is the next major tech company planning an expansion in the Bay Area. YouTube, which is based in San Bruno, plans to add more than 1,000 employees over the next few years and needs more space, the San Francisco Business Times reports. It currently employs 1,700.

Dyett & Bhatia has been hired by San Bruno to provide development guidelines for the 90 acres surrounding YouTube’s headquarters. Under a new specific plan, YouTube would have the option to renovate the existing properties and create new buildings. The plan's borders would be I-380, El Camino Real, San Bruno Avenue West and I-280 and would cover the 73-acre Bayhill Office Park and Bayhill Shopping Center.

YouTube has a 200K SF headquarters at 901 Cherry Ave., which it has been leasing from Gap for nearly a decade. Through its parent company, Google, YouTube also previously purchased 900K SF at the Bayhill Office Park with the 2015 purchase of 900 and 1000 Cherry St. In 2016, Google purchased 550K SF in the office park from Hudson Pacific for $215M.

YouTube will pay the $785K consultant fee and other city costs to create a new specific plan, which could take more than a year to finish. Once the plan is approved, YouTube can move forward on its expansion.
