Progress Report: Pier 27 and Exploratorium

San Francisco Mixed-Use

Pier 27 is the port's biggest pier and will soon be ready to welcome cruise ships (that also means CBP jail cells are coming). Visitors sailing into town will get 360-degree views of all the S.F. icons upon arrival at the new cruise terminal: the Golden Gate, Transamerica Pyramid, Alcatraz, and Bay Bridge, to name a few. Since Pier 27 is expensive to run, the port also uses it for events; America's Cup was the first, and subsequent ones will resume in Q4. (Hello, holiday party.)

The nearby Exploratorium has been a home run for the museum since its debut last April, port director Monique Moyer tells us, with 750,000 visitors to date (they expect 1 million by its year one mark). With wacky exhibits like Science in the City, Cow's Eye Dissection, and Skateboard Science, this makes sense. Some 100,000 of the visitors have been able to attend for free.
