Simon Malls Chief Operating Officer Michael E. McCarty called the new project a transformational redevelopment for the Brea Mall in a news release last week.

He said the mixed-use components would offer dining, residential, entertainment and a 120K SF Life Time Athletic fitness center.

“We are excited to redevelop the former Sears’s store with uses that will benefit the community and the existing retailers in these properties,” McCarty said.

Simon officials did not provide a timeline for when the redevelopment would begin.

The Sears store in Brea closed April 10. It was one of 39 big-box department stores Sears Holdings Corp. closed nationwide due to the company’s financial woes.

The Sears was one of five anchor department stores inside the 1.3M SF Brea Mall.

Built in 1998, the Brea Mall in North Orange County sits on 77 acres and features more than 175 stores.
