Popular women's retailer Anthropologie has begun rolling out large-format department stores, and it is bringing its eighth iteration of the concept to the D.C. area.

Urban Outfitters, the retailer's parent company, signed a 37K SF lease with Federal Realty to open the store, called Anthropologie & Co., in the former Barnes & Noble space at Bethesda Row. It is aiming for a fall 2018 opening.

The three-level, 37K SF store will be nearly three times the size of a standard Anthropologie. The retailer has eight of its traditional stores in the D.C.-area.

The large-format Bethesda Row location will include Anthropologie's women's clothing, accessories and home decor, plus a bridal and wedding section from its sister brand, BHLDN, and outdoor and gardening supplies from its sister brand, Terrain. The store will also feature a furniture showroom and a beauty and shoe salon. On the ground-floor it will have a café with outdoor dining.

The first Anthropologie & Co. department store opened last fall in Walnut Creek, California. Bethesda Row will be its eighth location and the first in the region.

At Bethesda Row, it will join retailers such as Warby Parker, Lululemon, Bonobos, the Apple Store and several other high-end options and restaurants.

“Over the last 20 years, Bethesda Row has become one of the most distinguished shopping districts in the country and an extremely valuable amenity to the surrounding communities," Federal Realty Mixed-Use Division President Chris Weilminster said in a release. "We are confident that Anthropologie & Co., with its exclusive services and mix of departments, will continue to shape the neighborhood as a one-stop destination for unmatched experiences.”
