Perkins+Will has been selected to design a $150M renovation to the E Wing of Building 10 on NIH's Bethesda campus (pictured), a project that should keep them busy for the next three years. The challenging undertaking will involve planning space for 10 institutes and two centers, says managing principal Jeffrey Welter, who describes the project as being like a Rubik's cube. The designers will also have to modernize the spaces, which date back to the 1950s, reports the Washington Business Journal. NIH has a design technical services branch that has already drafted a framework for Perkins+Will to base its design. The E Wing takes up just under 250k SF of the 15-story, 1M SF Building 10. It is the second of 10 wings the NIH plans to renovate, with construction scheduled in phases from 2018 to 2021. The new space will support about 800 employees, and will include labs, offices and classrooms. NIH is also seeking approval for a master plan to add more than a dozen new buildings to its 310-acre campus of 90 buildings. [WBJ]
