The DC United stadium being built on Buzzard Point will have more retail and green space than originally planned.
Updated plans filed with the Zoning Commission Tuesday include 14k SF of retail and a new public park, Urban Turf reports.
The retail corridor will be on First Street along the east side of the stadium. First Street will also be realigned to cut through the site and allow car, bike and pedestrian use. The new plans also changed the design for the 40k SF public plaza on the northeast side of the stadium, rendered above, to include a landscaped public park filling about half the space.
The changes stem from criticism from nearby property owners that the stadium area lacked retail and access. The new plans, designed by Populous, will go before the Zoning Commission on Nov. 28.
Local developers believe the 19,000-seat stadium, which will open in 2018, can bring new life to Buzzard Point in the same way Nats Park revitalized the Capitol Riverfront. [UT]
