After years of speculation, Capitol Crossing has landed a retail anchor for its five-building megaproject in the heart of D.C.

Property Group Partners, the project's developer, has partnered with Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group to establish a presence at Capitol Crossing. The partnership has not announced what the concept will look like, how many square feet it will occupy or when it will open.

Danny Meyer, the founder of Shake Shack, is a well-known New York City restaurateur who owns several dining spots, such as Blue Smoke, Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe and Jazz Standard.

Meyer had been looking to open a 40K SF food hall in New York City's Hudson Yards, but D.C. celebrity chef José Andrés beat him to it, securing a deal last month to open a 35K SF Spanish food hall in the massive Manhattan development.

Now Meyer is coming down to Andrés' home turf and could be looking to open a similar food hall concept to what he had in mind for Hudson Yards. Eataly, the popular New York-born food hall concept, had previously been rumored to be in talks to open at Capitol Crossing, but that deal fell through.

“We love that restaurants can become pioneering place-makers for their communities,” Meyer said in a release. “The Capitol Crossing project represents an irresistible opportunity to bring culinary excellence and hospitality to this emerging corner of DC."

Capitol Crossing's first two buildings, 200 Massachusetts Ave. NW and 250 Massachusetts Ave. NW, will deliver in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The buildings will each have about 32K SF of retail. Capitol Crossing's full plan calls for 2.2M SF of mixed-use among five buildings constructed on a deck atop I-395, halfway between Gallery Place and Union Station.
