The First Hotel At The Yards Opens With Restaurant From Danny Meyer

Southeast D.C. megaproject The Yards now has its first hotel, and D.C. has its first restaurant from Danny Meyer.

The 225-room Thompson Washington D.C. opened Wednesday at 221 Tingey St. SE, featuring restaurant Maialino Mare from Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group.

The 11-story hotel was built by a partnership of JW Capital Partners and Geolo Capital as part of The Yards, a 48-acre development spearheaded by Brookfield after it acquired Forest City in 2018. New York-based Studios Architecture served as the project's architect, with Parts and Labor Design working as the interior designer.

The Thompson features 7K SF of meeting space, two outdoor terraces, 17 suites and rooms starting at $359/night. It is the first D.C. hotel from the Hyatt-owned hospitality brand.

In the building's ground floor is the first full-service D.C. restaurant from Meyer, the founder of Shake Shack and popular New York restaurants such as Union Square Cafe. Meyer had previously planned to open a restaurant at Capitol Crossing, but last year pulled out of that deal.

A Roman-style seafood trattoria, Maialino Mare is the sister restaurant of USHG's Maialino in New York City, with head chef Rose Noel previously having worked at the Manhattan dining spot. The highly anticipated restaurant has already attracted some of D.C.'s biggest names, with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stopping by for the opening Tuesday night along with Rep. Joe Kennedy, entrepreneur Steve Case and other influential figures, according to Politico Playbook.

The hotel also features a rooftop bar, branded as Anchovy Social. It will serve cocktails, a wine and beer menu and shareable food options. It can also be rented out to accommodate 200-person private events.

The Thompson is the latest in a series of buildings to deliver at The Yards. Last year, the development welcomed The Bower, a 137-unit condo building from Hoffman & Associates, and Guild, a 191-unit apartment building from Brookfield. Another 264-unit apartment building, The Estate, is expected to open early this year. A host of other projects have delivered throughout the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood in recent years.

The hotel is the latest addition to D.C.'s growing roster of hospitality brands. The city's first Conrad hotel opened at CityCenterDC in March, its first CitizenM is expected to open in Southwest D.C. this year, and several other new hotel brands are also planned for future projects.
