D.C. has been eyeing the St. Elizabeths East campus as the site for a new hospital to improve healthcare offerings east of the river, and it has just found a partner to move the plan forward.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Friday the District has reached an agreement with George Washington University to develop a $300M acute care community hospital on the Southeast D.C campus.
The hospital would be fully operated by GW Hospital and integrated with its healthcare network. The facility would include between 100 and 125 beds and is expected to open in 2023. It would be the first hospital to open in D.C. since the GW Hospital Foggy Bottom nearly 20 years ago.
"This is the partnership our community deserves,” Bowser said in a release. “This new hospital will be part of our larger plan to rethink how we get Washingtonians connected to the care they need, when they need it."
Bowser in September recommended St. Elizabeths East as the preferred location for a new hospital following a study that evaluated six potential sites. The 180-acre St. Elizabeths East campus is ultimately planned for 2M SF of mixed-use development. The first residential phase, featuring 252 mixed-income apartments, is expected to deliver in 2020. A new $65M practice facility for the Washington Wizards is scheduled to open in September.
Another new healthcare facility opening east of the river was announced Thursday. Unity Healthcare is partnering with Howard University for a two-floor specialty healthcare center within the Conway Center development near the Benning Road Metro station.
