The bold new vision for the renovations to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library has been toned down a bit, but it has received approval from the Historic Preservation Review Board. Many of the improvements from design team Mecanoo and Martinez+Johnson that were slashed from the final plans had to do with replacing the existing brick of the 1972 structure with glass. Some brick will still be replaced, particularly on the first floor, Greater Greater Washington reports. The stair cores will still be moved and opened up with transparent glass and there will still be an auditorium between the fourth and fifth floors, but that auditorium will now be a rectangle, not an oval as originally proposed.
