Tenants looking for space in DC are inundated with offers from landlords for brand new, efficient properties with lots of shiny features. But don't worry, vintage buildings can be sustainable, too.

Here's the Cassidy Turley team (Phil Lawrence, Nicole Snarski, Carly Boyce, Betsy Bennett, and Evan Tyroler) that recently helped Clarion Partners achieve LEED-EB Platinum for its McPherson Building, at 15th and K, built in 88. (EB stands for existing buildings and, in this case, Excellent Bennett.) Phil says gaining the certification was all about balancing energy conservation with tenant comfort. Green efforts included an in-depth energy audit, plumbing retrofit, and an updated recycling program (65% to 70% of the buildings waste is recycled).

Betsy says a big part of getting up to LEED speed is having an engaged owner like Clarion, as well as tenants who believe in the cause (75% of the buildings employees use alternative transportation, which netted the landlord big points). And the awards keep piling up: The building achieved BOMA360 and won the 2012 Mid-Atlantic TOBY from AOBA for renovated buildings. Betsy and Carly will represent the building at the organizations international awards in San Diego this June. We expect they won't return, instead getting in line for Comic-Con in July.
